Not So Weird Wednesday - tech tools edition

Still recovering from 8 days of SXSW, in particular the Interactive Festival and the gems found within.

As a grassroots activist who believes in empowering the individual this week's blog post is dedicated to sharing a few cool tools...

Anyone Plan To Twitter the Pennsylvania Primary?

Twitter debuted at SXIA '07 where we could watch it unfold on big screens in the conference halls. Live shared "twitting" of an event can be mighty powerful stuff and now journalists are using teams of citizen twitterers to feed live reports.

Meebo the Conventions!

Meebo believes that "all you need is a keyboard and an opinion" to use their tool. You know how to use a chat room, right? So Meebo let's people on different IM platforms (IM, yahoo, google, etc) chat together. For SXIA this year, Meebo set up over 200 discussion rooms that were live during panels. The effect was direct and amazing. It's always interesting to add another layer of conversation.

Wonder if Congress has wi-fi? We could be covering the floor in a whole new way....

End the War, Honor Our Soldiers

Body of War is the story of a soldier who took a bullet to his spine and turned it into a movement to end the war. Tomas Young, his mother, and a clan of amazing musicians brought this film to SXSW and the crowds went wild.

Now showing in limited cities, I list this film as a tool because it will move the most pro-war opinion toward peace and peace is a good thing.

On the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, we honor our soldiers and hope for the swift end of this war.

Knowbility Gives VoterVirgin A Hand

Met today with Paul of Knowbility to be sure the VoterVirgin site is accessible to all users. Good news! We are (and got some great tips too!)

Knowbility is a super-fine organization making sure that people with all sorts of challenges can access websites. At SXSW Interactive they set up a booth and volunteers will check your site.

Turns out, the visually challenged have a program called JAWS that reads web pages! You can even hear the code and user controls filter out punctuation and control the speed of the voice.

I wore my own set of headphones and listened (wow! it was fast!)so I could hear my web site being read out loud. The voice sounds a bit like Stephen Hawking.

I had never experienced cyberspace with my eyes closed. It was an awesome new view! Thanks Knowbility!

Spring Break at SXSW

Well, the Texas primary and caucus had record numbers of lovely VoterVirgins casting ballots and becoming delegates to the county convention. Awesome!

We'll get back to the election in a little while.

This week we would be nowhere else on earth but at the SXSW Interactive Festival. There is not love like our love for the geeks and geekettes that descend upon Austin.

You can expect VoterVirgin to be a little distracted this week. If you need us, you will have to fly into town and figure out which panel or party of volunteer shift we are working. There are about 112 hours or more of fun to be had in the next seven days. More awesome.

Let us know if you are down here for the fest.

XOXO
Teresa and Ryan and Kim

Weird Wednesday: Craigslist Caucus Edition

Between recovering from the Texas primary/ caucus and getting ready to dive in to SXSW Interactive Festival, this is the best I could muster up for Weird Wednesday. Proving that democracy is sexy: from Austin Craigslist Missed Connections VoterV hopes you get your hook up!

136 is the best lookin precinct in town

Was I alone in my surprise at how great our precinct is?? We have the nicest parents, the cutest babies, and totally the best looking "young people". I do have to say that our Obamaniacs were tops, but really, the whole precinct was looking good. Everyone just looked so... healthy!

Oh, but it also seems we have the single most paranoid Clinton supporter I've ever observed... from a distance... Loosen up, lady! Yes, it sucked for all us early voters to have to sign to the caucus *after* all the latest voters who hadn't gotten there til 6:59, but geez. Deal with it. Your attitude was not helping the stress level in the room. Also, when we (other caucusers) told all the Clinton supporters that they could go straight to the front of their lines and sign in (as they had no lines left- I know, embarrassing), you genuinely thought we were just trying to force your out of the auditorium so... so what? so we could lock ourselves in and have a good chuckle and disenfranchise you? I mean, we're all democrats and yes, there was some tension, but gosh you were really uptight. Maybe you'd just had a bad day? I Hope today involves a Change for the better.

Precinct 136 caucus - front of Obama line - m4w

You carried the bags and I carried the table. You wore a white shirt with red sleeves and I wore black. Your hair is long and dark and mine is (very) short and light. We talked for a while but I left without even getting your name. Let me guess...it's Linda, right?

sorry, but 242 is the best! - w4m - 27

Just wanted to say thanks to ALL the participants in the 242 caucus last night. Both camps were helpful, friendly and enthusiastic. It was really wonderful meeting so many neighbors and encouraging that although there were over 600 (!) of us, we managed to get everything done without arguing and being petty. No matter who wins the nomination, I'm confident that the people of precinct 242 will work together to make some real Change in this country. Can't wait to see the other delegates at the convention!

it's a long shot but 235 caucus anyone - m4w - 38

you: brunette vixen with glasses laughing to yourself watching little dog lick little guy's head off
me: handsome devil with green hoodie watching you laugh and laughing to myself about how funny laughing is

we kept stealing glances i wanted to say hello but you left before i could muster up the courage

i hope our paths intersect at another time in the near future

To the 235 district lady seeker - 25

Unfortunately I am not your brunette vixon, but I think it was my son she was laughing at. Hope you find her. :)

Actually... 247 is the best looking precinct in town. - w4m - 27

Especially the handsome guy who stood alone by the books in the back corner. Isn't democracy fantastic?

guy w/ Hillary sign on Burnet yesterday - w4m - 29

3pm, Longish dark hair, jeans, button down, holding a very large Hillary sign and shouting at cars driving past.

I just wanted to say thanks for brightening my day. I had thought the young attractive guys were all with Obama. It's nice to know that there are some in my camp too. You made me wish that I hadn't voted early.

Vote lately??? - m4w - 35

Brown leather, blue jeans, long black hair, perfectly stunning! Where did you come from?

Hillary Caucus - m4m - 40

Hey guys you were a couple we meet last night you were in Prc 113 and I was in 112 . . . we talked about where we lived . . . should have gotten your number but with all the action going on lost track of that . . . hope you read this

GO HILLARY ! !

Beautiful Democratic Precinct Chair - m4w - 25

You are very attractive. We should have talked more, but you were obviously quite busy. I regret not sticking around until you wound everything up after the convention.

Ben at 136 caucus - w4m

We stood in line together forever tonight. Thought you were mighty interesting and cute as well. Interested in catching Meet the Press together sometime?
-S

Mutton chops at the D caucus today - w4M

Brown hair, brown eyes with a blue sweater and green pants. I liked your chops ;) You were waiting by yourself in the theater of Travis for the Democratic caucus. I was going to go talk to you but you went to help with something on stage. Wish I could've stayed to help too!

Summit Elementary: Black hair, pink nails, asked to leave - m4w

You came into the Republican (Ron Paul) Precinct Convention at Summit Elementary tonite. You said you weren't 18 yet, but wanted to get a see what the whole process was about...
You were asked to leave for some reason...I'm guessing cause of your age or something...idunno.
I just wanted to commend you for being so actively involved and interested in the whole process. I was impressed.

APD Officer, voter, pen lender, neighbor

I was wondering if you are married?
I enjoyed our short conversation in line.
I would like to get to know you better, but only if you are single.
I didn't see a ring on your finger, so I am curious.
If you read this and write me back, tell me something that will help me
know it is really you...maybe something else we talked about.

To all the campaign volunteers - 25

I just wanted to say thank you to all the people I saw at the HEB on Congress and Oltorf holding signs encouraging people to vote early for Clinton or Obama in the democratic primary. In the short time I was within ear shot of you as I got out of my car, I heard 3 or 4 rude things shouted at yall from passing cars. You guys must put up with a lot of crap. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to volunteer. It doesn't matter who I support in the election. I just find it heartening to see people passionate about something and actually doing something about it, rather than just talking.v

The girl who signed the card on the wrong line!

Eric at Anderson High Caucas ? - m4m - 101

I was tall guy that had Clinton sign - you are so cute! My precinct went for your guy, so I hope yours made you happy. It's all a great process.

Taking you to dinner would make me happy. Interested?

You educated me on gummy worms and voting - m4w - 35

You were in front of me in line just a few minutes ago. You bought gummy worms, sour cherries, and some other stuff. We talked about where to vote.

You seemed really sweet and cool... coffee and gummis sometime?

Texas Vote and caucus Today

For those of you voting in Texas today, a few things you should know:

You must vote at your polling place between 7AM and 7PM TODAY.

Find your polling place here

In Travis County: www.traviscountyelections.org

If you early voted, voted by mail or voted today in the Democratic primary you can also caucus at YOUR POLLING PLACE 7:15PM DO NOT BE LATE!

A caucus is basically a vote made in person instead of on a ballot. You sign in, get counted, and then select delegates to represent your precinct at the county convention.

We have no idea how long this will take because we expect a record turn out at this year's caucus.

Just grab a neighbor or a friend and dive right in. There will be a lot of people who know the rules and will help you get through your first caucus.

GO VOTE AND THEN VOTE AGAIN!

Friday: Last Day To Early Vote In Texas and Ohio

Just a reminder, Today (Friday) is last day to early vote in the Texas and Ohio Primary!

In Texas you can find your polling place here.

And don't forget, Democrats in Texas can vote and then CAUCUS on March 4th @ 7:15PM find your polling location here.

BTW: Voter turnout is BLOWING AWAY previous records. Participation is soooooo sexy!

Happy Voting!

Weird Wednesday : Tribute to ADD and Spring
